Why Read this Book?

Bronze and Sunflower is a translated historical fiction novel, originally written by beloved Chinese children’s author Cao Wenxuan. The book tells the story of Bronze and Sunflower, a young boy and a younger girl who are raised as brother and sister after Sunflower’s father tragically drowns. This novel, set in rural China during the Cultural Revolution, is a touching look at familial love and sacrifice while working to make a living from the land. We recommend this literature guide for approximately 5th grade and up. Please note: several deaths occur in this book, and some scenes of the stark reality of life for Bronze and Sunflower can be hard on the heart—keep this in mind if you have a sensitive reader.
